We've Done The Hard Work For You

To find out, we bought the most popular mushroom coffee brands on offer in the UK today and have listed our top 5 below.
We taste-tested them, experienced their effects, dug through their websites and analysed their ingredients - so you don't have to!

What Makes a Good Mushroom Coffee?

All the brands are making bold claims. But we found some were definitely better than others.
In our opinion, a good mushroom coffee boils down to the following things:

✔ authentic coffee taste

✔ generous quantity of mushrooms

✔ no unnecessary ingredients

✔ low caffeine content

✔ good value for money

✔ high safety standards (UK or EU ideally)

Want Focus & Energy? It's All About Lion's Mane

Most people want to try mushroom coffee because it promises a boost in focus, creativity, productivity and energy levels.
(Who wouldn't want that!)
But we discovered that different mushroom extracts are most known for different things.

Lion's Mane - focus, cognitive/mood boost and energy
Reishi - immune system support
Chaga - antioxidant
Cordyceps - libido and endurance
Tremella - skin hydration

Some brands include a mix of different mushroom extracts. This is great if you definitely want the different health benefits in one. But if not, you'll either be paying for those extra ingredients or getting a low dosage of Lion's Mane.

In our opinion, if you're like most people and are most interested in focus & energy, then choose a brand that focuses on Lion's Mane. You can feel the difference!

Price Comparison

In terms of price, things were made difficult because some brands run one-off promotions and offer suspiciously expensive 'free' gifts (for example a free spoon that supposedly costs £14...!)

So we compared prices based on what you'd reasonably be paying each month as a regular customer.

Although the prices vary, looking at it in terms of price per serving makes it a lot easier to make sense of it all. And there's a big difference between first and last place!

Because Lion's Mane is particularly important, we also ran the numbers on how much of it you get for your money.

Healthy Yeti and Spacegoods are joint first for offering a generous 1,000mg per cup. But Healthy Yeti tops the table for value for money with just 6p per 100mg of Lion's Mane.

#1 - Healthy Yeti

Our top recommendation is Healthy Yeti's mushroom coffee.

With 1,000mg of Lion's Mane per cup and less than half the caffeine of traditional coffee, we found it really delivers a noticeable boost in focus without the dreaded caffeine crash.
They have an uncomplicated formulation that focuses on high-quality Lion's Mane and Colombian arabica coffee, and have no added flavourings or additives.
And for value for money it comes first for both price per serving and for the amount of Lion's Mane they give you.

Taste - rich and full-bodied. An excellent real coffee taste that has depth and a nice aroma too.

Healthy Yeti say they've been refining their mushroom coffee formulation for over five years (which is more than most UK brands have been around for) and you can taste the results of their work! Their blend tastes nice black and also mixes well with different types of milks we tried.

They offer a free storage tin with your first purchase and impressed up with their fast, friendly customer service.

Overall, the combination of a high quality product at a very competitive price means it takes the top spot.

Ingredients: Lion's Mane Mushroom (1,000mg), Colombian Arabica Coffee, Maca Root.

#2 - Four Sigmatic

Coming in second place is Four Sigmatic. This is an American brand but has been increasing their presence in the UK recently.

The taste of their blend impressed us and we enjoyed drinking it especially with almond milk.

Whilst they have a relatively streamlined formulation, the main drawback is that each cup only contains 250mg of Lion's Mane. Such a large difference was certainly noticeable in terms of our ability to concentrate and maintain energy levels.

Also the price is more expensive at £1.10 per serving. This means in terms of value for the Lion's Mane you get, it's over 7 times more expensive than Healthy Yeti.

Ingredients: Lion's Mane Mushroom (250mg), Chaga Mushroom (250mg),  Arabica Coffee, Rhodiola.

#3 - London Nootropics

Next up is London Nootropics. Their coffee comes in sachets and a very presentable box.

We liked that they have a  Lion's Mane focused composition and with 466mg of Lion's Mane per serving, they fall into the middle of the range.

In terms of taste, we noticed it was a bit more 'earthy' than others. But this was less noticeable the more we blended it with milk.

However, they list "natural flavouring" in their ingredients which is a bit of a red flag. It's a loose term companies use that could mean any number of things but for when they choose not to specify.
'Natural flavouring' must come from food sources as opposed to chemicals, but is nevertheless a type of additive.

They have the highest price per serving at £1.25, and we noticed that shipping costs an extra £4.99 (unless you can spend over £30). Whereas most other brands on this list offered free shipping.

Although they came in third place for a mushroom coffee you'd drink day-to-day, if you were buying this as a gift, their lovely box packaging fits the bill nicely.

Ingredients: Coffee Powder, Lion's Mane Mushroom (466mg), Rhodiola, Natural Flavouring

#4 - Free Soul

Free Soul's version is the first multi-mushroom blend on our list. They combine Lion's Mane with Reishi, Maitake and Shiitake mushrooms, plus several other ingredients for function and flavour.

As a result their blend contains just 200mg of Lion's Mane per cup which is the lowest of all the brands we reviewed.

With so many ingredients going on we found the taste to be a bit confusing to place. It wasn't unpleasant, but it couldn't be described as just coffee. It divided opinion more than the previous entries on the list with some people liking it and others unwilling to finish their cup.

But in terms of convenience, if you did want all of these mushroom extracts in one, it's a good solution that would save time and money compared to buying them all individually.

Ingredients: Arabica Coffee Powder, Cocoa Powder, Ashwagandha, Turmeric, Lion's Mane (200mg), Reishi, Shiitake, Maitake, Maca, Cinnamon, Himalayan Pink Salt

#5 - Spacegoods

With their striking packaging and clever marketing we were excited to try this one for ourselves.

However, the taste was quite artificial compared to the others on the list. We noticed on the packaging that they add a stevia-based sweetener to their blend.

Surprisingly, it also contains a lot of added caffeine.
Each serving has 120mg of caffeine which is significantly more than a 'normal' cup of coffee! (which is 94.8mg according to Google).

They do offer a decaf version which we tried, but this was a chocolate flavour using cocoa powder. It reminded us more of a protein shake and wasn't at all like coffee.

On the plus side, if you're interested in a multi-mushroom blend, then Spacegoods definitely offers good value for money there. And they come second in terms of price per 100mg of Lion's Mane.

They offer some free gifts with your first purchase as well. But we did find the RRP price of them a bit unrealistic as they claim they're worth £52 which vastly exceeds the price of the mushroom coffee itself.

Ingredients: Coffee Powder, Maca Root Powder, Chaga, Cordyceps, Ashwagandha, Lion's Mane, Chicory Root Fibre, Pantothenic Acid (B5), Stevia Sweetener
